Location: August 14, 2008 – Olympic fans have watched breathlessly as Michael Phelps gets closer to achieving Olympic history. The swimmer has competed in five of his events so far, winning gold in each one. With three events left, the attention surrounding Phelps has grown to a fever pitch. Many have compared him to Carl Lewis, Jesse Owens and other amazing athletes who shattered Olympic records and captured the heart of fans.

If Phelps is able to win all eight of his events, he will have beaten the record set by Mark Spitz in 1972 during the Munich Olympics. Spitz won seven gold medals in swimming, and to this date, although the record has been matched, no one has been able to exceed it. Fans are pinning their high hopes on Phelps, and it is clear that the world is watching to see if Olympic history will be made in 2008.

Phelps is 23 years old and a native of Baltimore, MD. A three-time Olympian, Phelps has broken records each time he attends the games. His last effort at Athens won him seven gold medals, tying him with legendary swimmer Mark Spitz. In order to beat Spitz’s long standing record, Phelps will need to bring home eight gold medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics. This will require him to win every event in which he is eligible.

Since his entry in the Athens Olympics in 2003, he went on to college, attending the University of Michigan, where his coach was stationed. Although he could not compete at the school, Phelps did serve as an assistant volunteer coach while he was majoring in sport’s management. During this time, Phelps competed in many different events, including the 2005 World Championship and the Pan Pacific Games in 2006, where he took home five gold medals.

Although many have classed Phelps as one of the greatest swimmers alive, and possibly one of the best Olympians, he remains humble, stating that he is just there to swim. Phelps is eligible to compete in eight Olympic events this year, including the 400 individual medley, 4x100 medley relay, 4x200 freestyle relay, 4x100 freestyle relay, 200 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 200 butterfly, and the 100 butterfly. To this point, he has taken home five gold medals and appears to be well on the way to setting an incredible new record. http://www.olympicgoldrecord.com
