Best New Artist & Best Female Video nominations for MTVs 2008 VMAs

NEW YORK – Capitol Records “It Girl” KATY PERRY’s debut is turning into the best new artist breakthrough story of 2008. Perry’s fans -- online and in sweaty, exuberant Warped Tour crowds – have been several tracks deep on the album for months, but the major mass media is catching up as fast as it can…and the fever has caught on worldwide.

As her I Kissed A Girl logs its seventh week atop the Billboard Hot 100 and seals its status as the undisputed song of the summer in America, major Top 40 radio stations across the country, including the national Top 40 format leader Z-100 WHTZ/New York, have jumped on adding her new single, the wild electronic romp Hot N Cold. Blender Magazine calls the track a “spunky, climate-controlled kiss-off,” and Entertainment Weekly agrees, “It’s damn fun.” A video is scheduled for a Los Angeles shoot late in August, with official release to radio early in September. Perry will make the premiere live television performance of Hot N Cold on NBC’s Today show outdoor concert series on August 29th.

Since the release of I Kissed a Girl and One Of The Boys, which debuted at No. 9 on Billboard’s Top 200 album sales chart in America, the album continues to bullet in the Top 15. As Billboard notes, I Kissed A Girl was the 1,000 No. 1 single of the rock era, and has had the longest run at No. 1 since Flo Rida’s Low, early in the year. Not since Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy has a song charted on all four major radio formats – Top 40, Hot AC, Modern Rock and Rhythmic. It ties a four-year record for a female debut single with Ciara, and at seven weeks, now ties Capitol’s label record for weeks at No. 1 – sharing that honored spot with The Beatles’ I Want To Hold Your Hand.

Nominated for Best Female Video and Best New Artist in the MTV Video Music Awards 2008, I Kissed a Girl, directed by Kinga Burza, has topped the TRL chart since June 24th, just twelve days after Perry’s live premiere, and the video is now on view in every major music video outlet worldwide.

As I Kissed A Girl continues to sell in excess of 150,000 downloads weekly in the US and more than 2 million (double platinum) in total, Perry made her chart debut at No. 1 in the UK. The single has already topped the Australian, Canadian and Swedish singles charts, and is certified platinum in Australia and double platinum in Canada. It is only the second single in Australian history to hold the No. 1 spot solely on digital sales. One Of The Boys is gold in Canada, and the worldwide album release date is mid-September, with earlier releases in Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and Japan.

I Kissed A Girl, a No. 1 US iTunes download, has already hit No. 1 in iTunes international stores in Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK. It is charting Top 10 in Belgium, France, Greece, Italy and Norway.

I Kissed A Girl is also on track to equal its extraordinary U.S radio airplay globally, highlighted by top-20 positions in Australia (No. 1), Brazil, Canada (No. 1), Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, and the UK.

I Kissed A Girl, co-written with Perry by Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald, Max Martin and Cathy Dennis, was produced by Dr. Luke (Avril Lavigne, P!nk, Kelly Clarkson). Hot N Cold was written by Perry, Gottwald and Martin, and produced by Dr. Luke.

Perry was also joined on One Of The Boys by such noted producers and collaborators as Greg Wells (Mika, Natasha Bedingfield), Glen Ballard (No Doubt, Alanis Morrisette), Dave Stewart (Eurythmics), Max Martin (Leona Lewis, Robyn), Sam Hollander & Dave Katz (Gym Class Heroes, Boys Like Girls) and Butch Walker (Pink, The Donnas).
