Ten athletes and administrators with ties to Queen’s are representing Canada at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.

As a way of showing support Athletics and Recreation has developed a message board for posting personal messages and wishing good luck to Queen’s Olympians.

Among the ten are current students Katie Abbott (B. Sc’ 10) of Sarnia, ON and John-David (JD) Burnes (B. Sc ’10) of Toronto, ON.

Abbott is a third year biology major and a member of the Queen’s sailing team, competing in the ‘Yngling’ class. Burnes, a second year life sciences student, trained extensively at the Physical Education Centre on campus during the past academic school year and will represent Canada as part of the Archery team.

Alumni heading to the Olympic Games include Tim Berrett (M.A. ‘89 – Economics, MPA ’89) of Edmonton, Alta., (Race Walk); Gordon Cook (B.Sc ’02 – Engineering Physics) of Toronto (Sailing); Lauren Groves (B.A. ’03 Psychology) of Vancouver, Oskar Johansson (B.A. ’02 – Economics; B.Sc ’02 Mechanical Engineering) of Oakville, Ont. (Sailing); Ben Remocker (B.A. ’02 – Economics; B.Sc ’02 Mechanical Engineering) of Vancouver (Sailing); and Andrew Russell (B.A.’05 - Political Studies) of Dartmouth, N.S. (Canoe/Kayak-Flatwater).

This is Berrett’s fifth consecutive appearance at the Olympics and he’s the oldest member of the Canadian contingent, heading to Beijing at age 43. His best finish to date is a tenth place in the 50km Race Walk event during the 1996 Olympic Summer games in Atlanta.

Two other Queen’s alumni will be in China to aid the Canadian team in their quest for gold. Dr. Robert McCormack (Med. 1979) of Vancouver will act as Canada’s Chief Medical Officer and Dr. Andrew Pipe (Med. 1974) of Ottawa will be onsite as a physician.

Queen’s has sent a total of 56 different athletes to the Olympics (summer and winter) capturing nine medals (three gold; two silver and four bronze).

The last Queen’s alumna on the podium was Diane O’Grady when she captured a bronze in rowing as part of the Heavyweight Quads Scull team in the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics.
