Honeywell Runway Awareness and Alerting System Added to Airbus Catalog

FARNBOROUGH AIRSHOW. – Honeywell (NYSE:HON) announced today that its Runway Awareness and Alerting System (RAAS) has been added to Airbus’ e-catalog as a product available for all Airbus aircraft.

The selection of RAAS for Airbus’ web portal, eCatalog, and Service Bulletin availability allows Airbus single-aisle and long-range operators to add RAAS functionality to their aircraft directly through Airbus.

“The inclusion of RAAS as optional equipment reflects the safety leadership and strong commitment from both Airbus and Honeywell to reduce runway incursions,” said Garrett Mikita, President of Honeywell’s Air Transport & Regional business.“Enhancing flight crew situational awareness on the ground and decreasing the potential for runway incursions, increases safety in today’s crowded airport environments.”

Honeywell’s RAAS is an advanced safety system that helps pilots avoid runway incursions and other kinds of on-ground accidents during ground operations and on approach to landing through aural warnings.

Honeywell’s RAAS is a software enhancement to Honeywell’s proven Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) that uses the EGPWS computer and runway database to provide pilots with audible warnings if they are taxiing onto an active runway unintentionally. The system also confirms the runway identification, to make sure pilots are taking off or landing on the correct runway, and provides an audible warning if an aircraft inadvertently accelerates for takeoff while still on the taxiway. RAAS compares the aircraft’s location using Global Positioning System technology against a database of airport runways to pinpoint the aircraft’s location on the airport.

Honeywell introduced RAAS in 2004. The safety technology is installed on more than 200 air transport and 1,470 business aircraft, with another 800 airline systems on order.
