Fifth generation solution provides path to infinite capacity by optimizing network spectrum

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., June 2008— BigBand Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: BBND today announced that its switched digital video solution has been deployed, or is being deployed, by six cable operators, across 26 systems. Over fourteen million households in North America will have access to BigBand’s switched digital video solution once these deployments have all been completed, offering viewers the potential to enjoy expanded choices of high definition and standard definition programming.

“Switched digital video is being deployed at just the right time for the cable industry,” said Gerry Kaufhold, principal analyst for In-Stat, a market research firm. “The technology offers service providers the tools necessary to begin offering virtually infinite HD and SD programming, while leveraging their investment in final mile infrastructure. Switched digital makes a cable TV plant more flexible, and more valuable.”

BigBand Networks has integrated, or in the process of integrating, its switched digital video solution in both Motorola and Cisco set-top box environments, the only vendor, the company believes, that has demonstrated such versatility. BigBand switched digital video has also been deployed across three conditional access systems and four electronic programming guide environments.

“BigBand’s cable customers are better equipped to retain and attract subscribers by offering richer choices of programming. We’re continuing to introduce enhancements that will enable BigBand’s switched digital video customers to move along a continuum towards infinite HD and SD programming,” said Ran Oz, BigBand’s chief technical officer.

An array of management and monitoring tools, such as BigBand SVA (Switched Video Analysis), accelerate switched digital video deployments, assist with troubleshooting and fault resolution, and offer opportunities to further refine program lineups.
