Ashland Water Technologies, a division of Ashland Inc. (NYSE:ASH), is presenting its range of high-quality products for the paper industry at the International Paper Trade Fair in Stockholm, May 27-29. Organized by the Swedish Association of Pulp and Paper Engineers (SPCI), the show is one of the premier global meetings for this industry.

Ashland will feature its broad water treatment product portfolio that includes PRAESTOL® flocculants for cleaning and conditioning water and waste water, PRAESTARET® retention systems, and TALLOFIN® and PRAESTACID® deposit-control products. “These products are designed to increase the efficiency of the paper making operation and reduce overall cost to manufacture. At the same time many of these products offer environmental benefits, which we know are key priorities for our customers,” said Roland Müller-Buntzel, sales director for Northwest Europe.

PRAESTARET retention aid products allow manufacturers to use raw materials more efficiently in the paper-making process. The oil-free retention aids in the PRAESTARET K 300 series optimize the paper machine de-watering process while maintaining a favorable environmental profile. By combining a fixing agent and a retention component, the “two-in-one” formula delivers improved paper formation, better retention, excellent de-watering and improved machine performance.

Ashland’s comprehensive range of PRAESTOL flocculants for separating solids from liquids are used to condition fresh water and industrial water; treat waste water; and promote optimal thickening and de-watering of sludges. “In the paper industry, they are ideal for conditioning water from well and surface sources for use on paper machines,” said Müller-Buntzel. Using PRAESTOL flocculants in filter systems helps ensure maximum removal of solids from circulation water. They are also effective in the clarification of runoff water. During the clarification process PRAESTOL flocculants accelerate sedimentation in clarification pools, funnels and similar equipment.

Ashland also offers specially developed PRAESTOL flocculants featuring excellent hydrolysis stability and a high molecular weight. Unlike other products, they are effective even in high-alkaline pH ranges. The result is outstanding flocculation that helps reduce specific costs in de-inking and sludge treatment.

Ashland’s TALLOFIN deposit-control technology promotes a clean operating system that reduces the need for system maintenance while ensuring consistently high paper quality. TALLOFIN deposit-control technology’s favorable environmental profile can also help manufacturers meet stringent regulatory guidelines.

A complete range of products from Ashland Water Technologies is also available for treating cooling water and boiler water. “These products complement our others by using innovative and often patented technology to drive down operating costs while at the same time providing environmental improvements,” added Müller-Buntzel. Examples include the highly-effective ENVIROPLUS® hardness stabilizers and corrosion inhibitors; and the unique SONOXIDE® ultrasonic system for controlling bacterial growth in cooling water. Boiler costs can be lowered by using DREWCLEAN® reconditioning agents to remove deposits or by using BOILEX® volatile oxygen scavengers and pH control for conditioning water.
