Production of 400 Millionth GreenChip™ milestone in energy reduction

Eindhoven, The Netherlands.- NXP Semiconductors, the independent company founded by Philips, has marked the progress of its environmentally conscious design process by announcing the production of the 400 millionth GreenChip™, a highly energy-efficient family of ICs for use in consumer and computing power supplies. Thanks to these GreenChip™ products, which have been reducing the power required for PCs, laptops and TVs for ten years, NXP has helped save the same amount of energy that would have been required to light 16.5 million regular 60w light bulbs.

NXP also announced availability of its next generation of GreenChip™ products for PCs. The company calculates that if these were installed in all PCs around the world, three standard (1GigaWatt) power stations could be immediately decommissioned.

“Many people do not realize that semiconductor technology has an important part to play in the amount of energy their TV, mobile phone or computer uses,” commented NXP chief technology officer René Penning de Vries. “Long ago we realized the importance of reducing power consumption and introduced these chips. Now after producing the first 400 million GreenChip™, we are upping the game by increasing their ability to reduce power used by electronic devices. Our latest technology offers a unique opportunity for consumers to make a significant step in reducing their carbon footprint.”

GreenChip™ is an excellent example of NXP’s EcoDesign which takes the environmental aspects of a product into account during the initial design phase to ensure new products have minimal impact on the environment in the way they are designed and manufactured. Moreover, these chips limit the energy usage in applications throughout their lifetime.

The GreenChip™ family of ICs is designed specifically for energy saving and has, from its inception, led industry standards in PC power efficiency. The current, third generation of the GreenChip™ family saw the introduction of the GreenChip™ PC chipset to address power consumption in notebook adapters and LCD TVs as well as PC Desktop power supplies. The GreenChip™ PC already conforms to ENERGY STAR® requirements for 2009, and is the only solution for PC power supplies certified by EPRI for 85PLUS, increasing the overall efficiency of desktop PC power supplies by to 90%. This cuts energy losses in a desktop power supply by more than 50%. As a consequence of its scalable design that enables engineers to balance performance, cost and integrated stand-by, the GreenChip™ PC will enable computer users and businesses to reduce energy consumption.

Environmental conscious design principles are reflected across the NXP’s leadership domains, involving home electronics, automotive and multi-market semiconductors. At NXP’s Energy Saving Event taking place today at the company’s R&D headquarters in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, NXP will showcase alongside its GreenChip™ range sample products enabling energy efficiency as key to their overall design. These include, LCD TV 2D color-dimming backlighting, smart lighting solutions, energy metering and examples of energy efficient motoring.
