Tarik Everett, a senior of his class at Flint Central Academy, was named Visteon Corporation’s (NYSE: VC) Visteon Scholar at the National Association of Black Automotive Suppliers’ (NABAS) 20th Annual Scholarship Awards Banquet on May 6 at the Renaissance Center in Detroit, Mich.

Henry S. Martin Jr., associate director of Visteon’s supplier diversity development program, presented the $22,500 scholarship award to Tarik. This is the fourth year Visteon has supported the NABAS Scholarship Fund.

“Tarik is an impressive young man,” said Martin, “not only is he top of his class, but his focused on extra curricular and community activities.”

Tarik is involved in National Honor Society, student council, student senate, varsity tennis, Alpha Esquires Mentoring and Youth Leadership Program, various service projects through Greater Flint Youth Leadership Program and is a volunteer at Neithercut Elementary School.

His student quote – which was required for the scholarship applications – is: “Some people succeed because they are destined to, most succeed because they are determined to.”

Tarik saw the scholarship as a great opportunity. He was selected for the award based on his academic achievements. He plans to attend Howard University in Washington DC with a major in business and concentration in marketing. His plan is to work in the automotive industry post graduation.

“People will always need cars to get from point A to point B, and cars are always changing,” explains Tarik. “It’s a field where there is great opportunity to take control of challenges and try to make a difference.”

“Being part of the NABAS program reinforces our company’s commitment to diversity. It is an honor to contribute to, and invest in, the future automotive careers of promising young people such as Tarik.”

NABAS, formed in 1986, serves as a vital communication link between black-owned automotive suppliers and automotive manufacturers. The organization facilitates a scholarship fund, provides seminars and supports networking opportunities for its members. NABAS has offices in Detroit and Montgomery, Ala.
