Personal Guide to Surviving the Swimsuit Season

Jaws? That’s nothing.

Saw 2? Kids’ stuff.

There’s something else that strikes fear into the hearts of women everywhere. I Know What You Did Last Summer, and it involved a lot of hiding from swimsuit shopping.

Why? Because buying a bathing suit, no- trying on a bathing suit- under the cold, harsh light of the dressing room can be, well, scary. Don’t worry, it isn’t just you. I know models who act like they have a sun allergy so that they don’t have to deal with it.

It’s hard to feel comfortable about strutting around half-naked in front of people you barely know. But don’t you have a little bit of a fantasy about being that woman at the pool; the one who wears her suit with a pair of low, sling-back heels and a summer-weight cashmere wrap and drinks lemonade from a martini glass? Of course you do. We all want to be that woman.

So let’s be her.

Let’s take advantage of the options this season and wear a fantastic one-piece the color of orange sorbet. Let’s get a black triangle-top two-piece that looks great with a chunky necklace and a cuff. Let’s grab a Pucci-inspired print with a matching towel and hit the deck. Something beaded, with a kaftan. Or a chic bandeau with a buckle.

And most importantly, let’s put on some SPF and realize that the part about being fetching in a bathing suit is the smile we wear with it. It isn’t impossible. It just takes an honest appraisal of our body type and what looks best on us.

Let’s get out of the dressing room, throw off that giant beach towel and proclaim to the world that we’re fabulous.

Because baby, it’s gonna be One Crazy Summer.
