WASHINGTON - Amtrak Vacations, Amtrak’s vacation planning service, recently released its 2008-2009 Rail Travel brochure, featuring more than 40 destinations in the United States and Canada. Packages offer travel on Amtrak, car rentals, hotel accommodations, plus sightseeing excursions. The 40-page brochure includes helpful hints travelers need to plan a vacation including maps highlighting available destinations, discounts available on rail fares, onboard accommodations and dining options, and train and destination images. It’s a must for travel agents planning rail vacations for clients.

The most noteworthy addition to the new brochure is nine comprehensive, independent rail journeys. These new journeys offer easy-to-book packages inclusive of rail travel, hotel stays, attraction and event tickets, meals and much more. Journeys include:

* 10-day/9-night American Heritage by Rail tour, featuring Washington, Philadelphia, New York City and Boston priced from $1434 per person;
* 11-day/10-night Northern Border & Pacific Northwest by Rail tour, featuring Chicago, St. Paul/Minneapolis, Glacier National Park and Seattle priced from $1927 per person; and
* 10-day/9-night Grand Canyon Discovery by Rail tour, featuring Chicago, Santa Fe, Grand Canyon National Park and Flagstaff priced from $1239 per person.

Six additional packages are available with travel in the United States and Canada. All Independent Rail Journeys are customizable based on the client’s needs and budget.

Travel on Amtrak includes several different classes of service. Coach class accommodations provide a large reclining seat, plenty of legroom, a fold-down tray table, and overhead racks for luggage. It is the most economical way to travel on Amtrak. Business class is available on many short- to medium-distance trips and offers reserved seating. Seats are roomy with overhead lights and fold-down tray tables.

First Class Sleeping Cars are available for passengers traveling overnight on long-distance trains. Sleeping car bedrooms are available for one to four people with daytime seating arrangements, which easily convert to beds at night. Dining Car meals are included in the price of accommodations in First Class.
