Supporting speeds of up to 100 Mbps over existing copper pairs

CeBIT, Hanover, Germany, March 2008 — Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today introduced the Alcatel-Lucent 7352 Intelligent Services Access Manager (ISAM) Fiber to the Building (FTTB) Optical Network Terminal (ONT), as part of its newly announced FTTB portfolio for ETSI service providers.

The Alcatel-Lucent 7352 ISAM FTTB ONT is an ultra-compact VDSL2 access node optimized for FTTB deployments. The product complies with the Full Service Access Network (FSAN) gigabit passive optical network (GPON) standards, and supports the delivery of very high-speed broadband services (up to 100 Mbps) over existing copper pairs.

The Alcatel-Lucent 7352 ISAM FTTB ONT allows service providers to deploy high-capacity broadband services with a reduced time to market by re-using in-building copper. In addition, Alcatel-Lucent’s unique ‘virtual ONT’ model supports the same quality of service (QoS) across copper and fiber.

“As operators throughout Europe accelerate their mass-market fiber deployments, in many cases, FTTB platforms which leverage GPON uplinks with VDSL2 subscriber interfaces are simply the most practical and cost-effective solution available,” said Erik M. Keith, Senior Analyst for Broadband Infrastructure at Current Analysis. “For example, in Germany, where approximately 70% of households are multi-dwelling units (MDUs), Alcatel-Lucent’s 7352 ISAM FTTB ONT is an ideal platform for supporting fiber-speed services over in-building copper.”

“This latest addition to the ISAM FTTB portfolio enables our customers to achieve aggressive time to market targets when deploying high-speed broadband services in areas where the installation of in-building fiber is difficult or not economical,” said Luis Martinez Amago, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s fixed access activities. “This highly integrated FTTB product is an integral part of Alcatel-Lucent’s ISAM family and is managed by the 5520 Access Management System (AMS) – for an optimal network transparency.”

Alcatel-Lucent is the world leader in fixed broadband access, and a trusted partner guiding its customers along the path of access network transformation. Alcatel-Lucent provides innovative access solutions to the top-20 global operators, supporting the largest mass deployments of video, voice and data services.

Alcatel-Lucent brings its customers the strongest product portfolio in all fixed broadband access segments, thought leadership demonstrated by consultative marketing programs, substantial and ongoing investment in innovation and technology, and the experience of a market leader that is accustomed to supporting very large, complex end-to-end deployments.
