Solution targeted primarily at unconnected devices and mobile broadcasters

Barcelona, Spain – Mobile World Congress 2008 .- Irdeto, the proven expert in content security for digital TV, IPTV and mobile, and Giesecke & Devrient (G&D), the world’s second largest manufacturer of smart cards, announced today the successful integration of Irdeto’s security solution on G&D’s Mobile TV Card. This integration enables mobile TV broadcasters to address a rapidly increasing number of mobile TV receivers that support microSD cards.

The G&D Mobile TV Card opens a direct path for broadcast operators or service providers to mobile TV subscribers using either connected or unconnected devices. It securely stores and manages the keys required for conditional access systems, allowing encrypted mobile TV content to be broadcasted to a broad range of devices, such as portable media players, PDAs and mobile phones. The large memory capacity enables additional services, such as Personal Video Recording (PVR), timeshifting and personal media storage.

Irdeto has partnered with G&D because of their leading position in the field of mobile TV cards. “Irdeto has gained expertise in mobile TV being the world’s first conditional access systems vendor that successfully delivered content protection for all three mobile standards S-DMB, T-DMB and DVB-H,” stated Doug Lowther, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Irdeto. “Our customers have expressed high levels of interest to offer pay TV service via portable and highly secure platforms. G&D’s mobile security cards are yet another way Irdeto can meet these demands.”

“The highest possible security for content storage and user rights management is absolutely crucial for the content providers of mobile TV systems. Based on G&D’s comprehensive security know-how and smart card expertise we developed the Mobile TV Card as an ideal solution for conditional access systems. We partnered with Irdeto as one of the industry leaders in conditional access solutions and DRM for mobile devices,” commented Marcus Rosin, group vice president of G&D’s new business division.
With nearly 40 years experience in developing enabling technologies for pay media services, Irdeto is a leader in conditional access (CA) and DRM for the mobile market. The company has unmatched experience with live customers in Satellite Digital Multimedia Broadcast (S-DMB), Terrestrial Digital Media Broadcasting (T-DMB) and Digital Video Broadcasting Handset (DVB-H) technologies. With DVB-H, Irdeto solutions cover both the Open Security Framework (OSF) specification and the Open Mobile Alliance’s (OMA) BCAST smartcard profile. Irdeto’s broad portfolio of security products also includes a value-added (OMA) DRM client integrated with a wide variety of mobile handsets and operating systems, as well as, through its subsidiary, Cloakware Robustness Solutions for the protection of critical software applications embedded in mobile handsets and consumer electronics devices.
