Midland, MI .-Alstom Power, Inc. (Alstom) and The Dow Chemical Company (Dow) announce a joint development (JDA) and commercialization agreement for advanced amine scrubbing technology for the removal of CO2 from low pressure flue gases particular to fossil fuel fired power plants and other major industries. The agreement between Alstom and Dow is worldwide and exclusive for the application of this specific technology.

Because of the recognition of CO2 as a contributor to global warming, development of this technology will be an important step towards carbon emissions reduction by the power industry.

Under the agreement, Alstom will commercialize and manage the installation of carbon capture solutions using the developed process. Dow, as a global gas treating technology leader, will support Alstom by leveraging its technical capabilities to co-develop an optimized capture system.

Philippe Joubert, president of Alstom’s Power Systems business states, “This agreement is both integral and synergistic to Alstom’s comprehensive global CO2 strategy. The combination of Alstom’s air quality control experience and leadership in power plant steam, heat and water cycles with Dow’s chemical expertise and gas separation knowledge will allow us to produce the best amine-based carbon capture solution on the market, from both an environmental and an economic perspective.”

The world’s largest producer of amines, Dow cites the agreement with Alstom as part of the company’s efforts to address energy efficiency and climate change through technology. “Through Dow’s 2015 Sustainability Goals, we have committed to the world that we will harness the power of the Human Element to develop products and solutions that will reduce mankind’s global footprint,” says Janet Giesselman, vice president and general manager of Dow Oil & Gas Solutions. “As we move into the demonstration phase, we are optimistic about the positive environmental contributions this unique new technology will enable.”
