Scopus includes 600 key titles suggested by the scientific community

Scopus®, the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature and quality web sources with smart tools to track, analyze and visualize research, today announced that it will add 600 titles to its already extensive database of 15,000 peer-reviewed journals.

As scientific research becomes more interdisciplinary and global, researchers increasingly face challenges to find all the information relevant for their research. Since its inception, Scopus has committed itself to helping researchers to overcome problems they face in their daily work. To ensure it covers all information deemed relevant to scientific researchers, Scopus has established a content strategy that puts the research community’s voice at its core. Users are invited to submit titles for inclusion (External link which are evaluated by librarians and researchers represented in the independent Content Selection & Advisory Board (CSAB).

“We believe the best way to identify relevant and high-quality content is to work closely with the scientific community” states Niels Weertman, Director Scopus “On the basis of the titles they suggest and their evaluation of importance, relevance and quality, Scopus can decide what sources to include.”

In total, over 1,700 titles were suggested by librarians and researchers indicating the increasing importance placed on Scopus by the scientific community. After extensive evaluation of all titles by the CSAB, 600 titles were selected (35% of the suggested titles) to be added to Scopus in the course of next year. These additional titles will become available at no extra costs.

Despite the broad selection of suggested titles, there is a continuous focus on content from emerging countries and Social Sciences. Almost 20% of the new titles originate from Central & South America reflecting the growing importance of this region’s scientific output. In Social Sciences, 200 new titles will be added to the already extensive coverage of 2,800 titles.

“Research publications from regions such as Latin-America and Asia are increasingly becoming more essential to the research community,“ Niels Weertman adds “With these selected 600 titles from important evolving scientific regions, we trust users can rely on Scopus to find all relevant literature for their scientific research – today and in the future.”

The Scopus CSAB is satisfied, “The strength of Scopus has to lie in the fact that it covers scientific literature in targeted research areas, ”says Ger Spikman, Head of Selection and Content Management at Wageningen University Library, the Netherlands, and member of the Scopus CSAB, “This strategy is also a prerequisite for Scopus’ position in the market as a relevant and current abstract and citation database. For us, Scopus is a success when people tell us that they find all they need for their scientific work or study in Scopus.”
