LOCKHEED MARTIN high school student mentoring program to hold open house on SEPTEMBER 24

MARION, MA.- Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT], in cooperation with UMass Dartmouth’s College of Engineering, will host an open house on Monday, Sept. 24 for parents and students who are interested in learning more about the company’s pre-engineering mentoring program for high school students.

The UMass Dartmouth Program Recruitment for Students in Math, Engineering, and Science (UMDPrimes) program is designed to help high school students explore career opportunities in the fields of engineering, math and science. Throughout the school year, students meet one evening per week at Lockheed Martin’s Marion facility where both local high school teachers and Lockheed Martin engineers will provide math and science tutoring; preparation assistance for the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) and Standard Aptitude Testing (SAT) exams; career counseling; and information about college entrance requirements. In addition, the program offers tutoring by UMass Dartmouth undergraduate engineering students, field trips, meetings with engineers and an end of the year banquet. Monthly parent club meetings are held to encourage involvement. The UMDPrimes program begins October 1.

Past participants in UMDPrimes have included local students from theWareham, Old Rochester Regional, Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical, Dartmouth, New Bedford and Upper Cape Cod Tech high schools.

“UMDPrimes is a valuable resource for families whose children are considering a career in engineering or science,” says Renée Lopes-Pocknett, associate director of the Frederick Douglass Unity House at UMass Dartmouth, who coordinates the program with Lockheed Martin program manager Donna Edwards. “We provide a small, specialized learning community with social and cultural components in addition to the academic focus.”

“We’re very happy to support and co-lead this effort,” says Bill Walsh, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin’s Marion business. “These young men and women are tomorrow’s workforce. By offering this program, we’re hoping the students will develop solid foundations in math and science that can open doors to future opportunities in engineering careers.”

To qualify for participation in UMDPrimes, students must have an interest in engineering, math or science as a career and must have already completed or be currently enrolled in Algebra I. They should also provide a high school transcript and their PSAT or SAT scores if available upon registration for the program.
