Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) is developing a new high-performance ASIC with NovAtel Inc. (NASDAQ: NGPS), a leading provider of precision Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) components and subsystems, the company announced today.

The new ASIC, the second design on which Fujitsu has worked with Calgary-based NovAtel, is to be used in GPS receivers for high-precision market applications such as mapping, surveying, precision agriculture and machine guidance. NovAtel’s technology is also at the core of ground reference networks around the world used for civil aviation navigation. The first ASIC the two companies successfully developed is now in full production.

“This new ASIC continues the productive, successful relationship we have enjoyed with Fujitsu,” said Curtis Anderson, NovAtel’s vice president, OEM Product Development. “The ASICs we have developed with Fujitsu are key components in our world-class precise positioning technology.”

“NovAtel is an industry leader in the development of GNSS components and subsystems designed for rapid integration into commercial, high-precision applications,” said Keith Horn, chief operating officer, Fujitsu Microelectronics America. “We are excited to work closely with them on another important ASIC program, providing a vital core technology that supports the additional satellites and frequencies that NovAtel’s technology roadmap demands.”
