University of Warwick Helps Warwickshire Schools Excel at Further Maths A level

University of Warwick mathematicians have helped two dozen Coventry and Warwickshire schools excel in their further maths A level results, sending school pupils off to study maths to degree level at Warwick, Oxford and many other universities.

The University of Warwick based Coventry and Warwickshire Further Mathematics Centre (part of the national Further Mathematics Network) has been supporting 24 schools and colleges in Coventry and Warwickshire, working with them to provide their sixth form students with Further Mathematics tuition. Some of the 100+ local students receiving tuition travel to the University of Warwick to attend their Further Mathematics sessions. Others are visited in their school/college by a tutor.

Further Mathematics is theseciond fastest growing subject at A-level. The number of candidates sitting the exam has increased significantly this year (from 6,000 to 7872 in just three years). The increase in numbers sitting AS-level Further Maths is even more impressive – up well over 50 per cent in the same period.

Dr Tim Honeywill, the Coventry and Warwickshire Further Mathematics Centre Manager, said, “It’s been great to see so many students eager to learn, and to watch them flourish, grow in confidence and develop skills that will help them at university and beyond. Being able to work with local schools and colleges to set this up has been a pleasure and a privilege.”
