Turkey joined the Kimberley Process and has undertaken to prevent the importation of conflict diamonds.

According to Jeweler Network, the chairman of the Istanbul Gold Exchange (IAB), Osman Sarac, announced that his organization will be responsible for the importation and exportation of rough diamonds.

IAB consultant, Ramazan Santo, said that previously illicit diamonds could easily be smuggled into Turkey: “Conflict diamonds could enter Turkey easily even in matchboxes. However, thanks to the Kimberley Process Certificate, the entrance of conflict diamonds to Turkey is forbidden now.”

Turkey initially applied for membership in the Kimberley Process in 2003. Following legislative and technical procedures, it has become one of 47 Kimberley Process member countries.
