Victoria Mitchell has been appointed as Deputy Editor of The Scottish Press Association.

The role of deputy editor is a newly created role that reflects the increasing importance of multimedia in Scotland.

In her new position, Victoria will be working to expand the role of video journalists in Scotland and develop new opportunities for the multimedia team. Additionally, she will continue with her news reporting duties and will assist the Editor of The Scottish Press Association, Iain Duff, in running the Glasgow newsdesk.

Victoria steps up to her new role having worked as chief reporter for The Scottish Press Association for the last three years. She has covered major stories including the Maryhill plastics factory blast and G8 summit at Gleneagles, and has reported from hot spots around the world including Iraq, Sri Lanka and Turkana in Kenya.

Victoria joined The Scottish Press Association in June 2003 as a general reporter. Before joining PA she worked on a number of Scottish titles including the Sunday Mail, Daily Record and The Herald as a news reporter. She started her career in journalism in 1997 when she joined her local paper, the Wishaw Press, as a cub reporter.

Looking forward to the challenges ahead, Victoria commented: “I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to develop PA’s multimedia service for our Scottish customers. Being able to draw on my 11 years experience of reporting in Scotland will be invaluable in meeting the challenges that lie ahead.”

Iain Duff, editor of The Scottish Press Association, said: "As chief reporter in Scotland, Victoria has demonstrated her ability to handle the biggest news stories both ’on the road’ and on the news desk. Her new position will develop those skills further as well as focusing on the vitally important area of multimedia.

“Her appointment is recognition of our commitment to providing a quality video service from Scotland alongside our existing text service and I am delighted that she is taking on this new role.”
