Formaldehyde Ban - The hidden cost of compliance.

WEBWIRE

With only two months to go the UK Embalming Supplies Industry is casting around for a White Knight to pay for the upcoming Biocidal filing fee’s. What little is known or explained is the costs involved in registering and supporting a chemical and or group of chemicals that are a known CMR Risk. (Carcinogen, Mutagen and Reproduction)

Provisional research with German based Rapporteurs indicate that each individual product such as “Dodge Permaglo 20” will need to be registered and supported. With registration will come a fee of up to £700,000 per product, this would mean for company’s such as Dodge their fee’s would be in the millions. The Rapporteur contacted mentioned that if there was a real interest in going forward with formaldehyde then due to the delay in such a registration any fee’s would have to paid up front and with no guarantee of success!

The question the industry is being asked, is who should pay for these registrations? And why has nothing been done to prepare for this cost!

What we would like to know is:

Should the funeral industry pay?

Or should the producers of embalming products pay?

Recently we reviewed several documents from “within” the industry “supposedly” explaining the situation and asking for financial support.

Surely the users of these products have already paid once. Are they being asked to pay twice to use the same product?

What is known is the sheer cost of registering and supporting such products. The legal and financial obligations have already seen FAREG withdraw from the process due to lack of support, can this latest initiative stand a better chance?

CMR Risks is an NGO interested in evaluating the current situation. We want to know whether embalmers or embalming products suppliers should pay. Or should the industry start looking elsewhere!

We are interested in the next 20 years so your honesty and comments will be received with seriousness and total discretion.
