Epson Develops Industry’s First USB2.0 Storage Controller LSI to Include USB Software

WEBWIRE

Seiko Epson Corporation (“Epson”) today announced that it has developed the S1R72U16, a USB2.0 storage controller LSI that is compatible with high-speed USB2.0. Samples of the S1R72U16, the first*1 in the industry to include USB2.0 software, became available for shipping from this month.

USB flash drives have undergone rapid and explosive growth over the past few years due to the drop in their market price and increasingly larger memory capacity, and the uses of these drives in various embedded devices has also expanded greatly. However, adding USB2.0 high-speed functions to these embedded devices requires users themselves to either develop the USB2.0 software or undertake such tasks as adopting, installing, and carrying out operation verification on the software, creating a very large burden for those who must develop the software for the product. Moreover, even if USB2.0 high-speed functions are added to the embedded device, various factors could prevent the device from realizing the expected transfer rate.

The newly-developed S1R72U16 responds to demands by users, such as “We’d like to equip our company’s embedded devices with USB host functions, making it possible to connect USB flash drives or external hard disk drives,” or “We’d like to realize the high speed transfer of data in a way that is simple, takes very little time, and does not require much development effort.”

USB2.0 high-speed controller LSI products are among Epson’s most important products. Epson will continue its efforts to enhance this line-up of products, with the aim of growing so that the name Epson becomes synonymous with USB.

Main features of the S1R72U16

1) Development of USB2.0 software is unnecessary
Because USB2.0 software, such as USB protocol host stack, mass storage class, and HUB class, is already included in the on-board chip, it is not necessary for the user to undertake the development of new USB2.0 software.

2) High-speed data transfer is now a reality
High speed data transfer rate of over 240Mbps*2 is realized through the connection of ATA100 to high-speed USB2.0.

3) Connection with a system is easy
All that needs to be done is connect the S1R72U16 with the system’s IDE bus or a 16bit general-purpose CPU bus (memory bus).

4) A thoroughly comprehensive development support environment
A thoroughly comprehensive development support environment is provided to alleviate the user’s development burden.

* Incorporates development support functions (processing history can be monitored by connecting the S1R72U16 with the PC).
* Incorporates USB logo verification (embedded host) functions (including software).
* Provides various documents, FAQ, application notes, and evaluation boards.

Notes
*1: Based on studies carried out by Epson (with regard to host controller LSI compatible with high-speed USB2.0).

*2: Based on measurement environment provided by at Epson.
