This year’s Alice S. Marriott Award for Community Service was awarded to the Renaissance Sao Paulo Hotel in Brazil for creating a volunteer program that engages nearly 600 employees year round. Last year, 100 percent of them volunteered in community services activities, which included preparing and serving meals at a local soup kitchen, planting tree saplings for a healthier environment, and mentoring students through the Youth Career Initiative program. Since 1992, the Alice S. Marriott Award for Community Service has recognized a company facility and its employees for continuing the commitment of both co-founders to help improve the lives of others through the gift of energy, time and resources.

The J.W. Marriott, Jr. Diversity Excellence Award was presented to the Dayton Marriott Hotel in Ohio, which formed the Alliance for Work-Based Education in partnership with the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur Province Ministry Fund. Through the program, employees attend on-site tutoring sessions on business days, learning basic communication skills, English, math and life skills needed to eventually advance their careers.

The Diversity Excellence award was established to recognize a business unit or corporate department that demonstrates excellence in promoting Marriott’s long-standing commitment to diversity and building an environment of inclusion for all. Through the years, this legacy has become a fundamental operating principle and business imperative.
