Chunghwa Telecom selects Alcatel-Lucent Ethernet/MPLS solution to support island-wide fiber to the building initiative

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced a contract with Chunghwa Telecom (CHT), the largest operator in Taiwan, to provide Ethernet/MPLSsolutions that will significantly expand its subscriber reach.

The new contract is part of CHT’s “Optical Era Project” which involves an investment of approximately USD 180 million to construct an island-wide fiber optical network over a five-year period. The final goal of the project is to bring fiber optic connections to 2.4 million subscribers by the end of 2010.

CHT is deploying the Alcatel-Lucent 7450 Ethernet Service Switch (ESS), which provides scalable Ethernet/MPLS aggregation resulting in high bandwidth for high-speed Internet, video and voice services. By using the Alcatel-Lucent solution, CHT can expand its fiber-to-the-building (FTTB) customer coverage and capacity, provide Quality of Service (QoS), security policy enforcement for triple play services, and better Virtual Private Network (VPN) scalability and network reliability to increase revenues from its VPN business. Alcatel-Lucent is also providing installation and maintenance support for its solution.

“This contract from CHT reinforcesour growing success in Taiwan,” said Roc Jih, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s activities in Taiwan. “Alcatel-Lucent’s latest telecom solutions will assist CHT in deploying its island-wide FTTB which will ultimately enrich the daily lives of people in Taiwan with advanced services.”

Alcatel-Lucent has been a close partner to CHT since 2005, when CHT first adopted its highly scalable Ethernet/MPLS aggregation solution to roll out Taiwan’s triple play network. Over 170 service providers in more than 65 countries around the world have selected the Alcatel-Lucent IP/MPLS portfolio as key elements of their IP transformation. During the first quarter of 2007, Alcatel-Lucent reinforced its #2 position in Services Edge Routing garnering 22% of the market according to Synergy Research Group.
