Jungbunzlauer welcomes new EU Regulations on Claims and Food Fortification

WEBWIRE

The long-awaited new EU claims and food fortification regulations* had been undersigned in January 2007 and will be valid for all EU member states as of 1 July 2007.

Jungbunzlauer highly welcomes these regulations which will have a positive overall impact on the legal basis for customers in the functional foods industry, using its healthy choices of ingredients, namely sub4salt, erythritol and organic mineral salts.

The new framework on functional/fortified foods eases the EU-wide marketing of foodstuff by establishing uniform rules, i.e. also in those countries which had a more restrictive legislation on claims and food fortification so far.

It is noteworthy that claims must be substantiated by scientific evidence. In this respect, Jungbunzlauer’s organic mineral salts get support from the new EU claims legislation, due to their superior bioavailability and high effectiveness when used for fortification in human studies. Supporting information on potassium (heart health), calcium (bone health, anti-obesity) and magnesium (bioavailability) are available upon request.

Annex II of the food fortification regulation contains a positive list of mineral substances that may be added to foods wherein all Jungbunzlauer mineral salts (K, Ca, Mg) are included and thus, may be added to foods. The positive list also includes the latest addition to Jungbunzlauer’s mineral salts, trimagnesium citrate which in the EU was limited to applications in food supplements and dietary products so far.

*Both regulations can be found on the EUR-Lex homepage in all EU languages:
