Wash your clothes in cold water

Care cold water detergent, which was launched earlier this year, was among three runners-up when Elforsk gave out its Elforsk Award yesterday.
Do your laundry at half the usual temperature – the washing result is the same and you save money on the electricity bill. According to Dong Energy, these are the facts concerning the Care cold water detergent that was put on the market in January. This means that you can reduce the washing temperature from 60 to 30 degrees or even lower it to 20. The energy savings realized by using the detergent resulted in a nomination for the coveted Elforsk Award.

Care cold water detergent is an enzyme-based detergent that has been developed jointly by Teknologisk Institut (Danish Technological Institute) and Danlind while Novozymes has supplied the enzymes. Care cold water detergent has also been awarded the Community eco-label, the Flower.

”Care contains enzymes from Novozymes which are particularly effective at low temperatures,” says Anders Lund, Marketing Director for detergent enzymes at Novozymes.

Elforsk has supported the project financially and Dong Energy and Teknologisk Institut have collaborated on examining whether the detergent actually works at such low temperatures.

The testing shows that if all Danish households use Care – and wash their clothes at half the temperature – the Danes will save one third of the energy we use per year on doing laundry. These savings equal the annual electricity consumption of 90,000 families.

If everyone in Denmark wash their clothes at half the temperature, it will also help reduce CO2 emissions – the equivalent of about 1 per cent of Denmark’s obligations according to the Kyoto protocol.

The Elforsk Award

Elforsk is the Danish energy companies’ research and development programme for efficient energy use. The purpose of the Elforsk Award is to put electricity research combined with product and process development on the agenda and this year’s prize goes to the most innovative, energy-saving and usable project.
