TAIPEI, Taiwan – Nortel* [NYSE/TSX: NT] and Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs (MoEA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the joint development of a full end-to-end WiMAX ecosystem. The MoU seeks to enhance Taiwan’s position as an international showcase for broadband wireless innovation and underscores Nortel’s standing as a global leader in next-generation wireless technologies.

The MoU was signed at a ceremony in Taipei by Steve Ruey-Long Chen, minister, Ministry of Economic Affairs and Peter MacKinnon, general manager, Nortel WiMAX and Wireless Mesh, and chairman of the board, LG-Nortel. Under the scope of the MoU, Nortel and MoEA plan to facilitate the end-to-end WiMAX ecosystem in Taiwan, including joint prototype product development, Taiwan-wide interoperability testing, support for WiMAX device development, OFDM-MIMO integration, and collaboration on the next generation of WiMAX standards. This MoU builds upon Nortel’s existing WiMAX deployments under the M-Taiwan Initiative: the build out of Taiwan’s first Mobile WiMAX network Yilan, announced in December 2006, and the recent announcement of a Taiwan Mobile Healthcare Services deployment with Chunghwa Telecom.

“Nortel’s global experience in Mobile WiMAX technology and its leadership in Taiwan’s telecommunications industry have made the company a key player in the evolution of our M-Taiwan project,” said Chen. “This MoU brings us ever closer to delivering high-speed Internet access to all our citizens wherever they are and with whichever device they select.”

“Nortel’s WiMAX solutions will help take the complexity out of the user experience by delivering seamless broadband wireless services to Taiwan,” said MacKinnon. “This MoU sets the stage for Nortel and MoEA to make Taiwan a truly international showcase for wireless broadband innovation.”

Execution of the joint development is subject to the signing of a definitive contract between the parties concerned.
