FAIRFAX, Va. – General Dynamics Information Technology, a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), has been awarded the 2006 James S. Cogswell Outstanding Industrial Security Achievement Award by the Defense Security Service (DSS).

General Dynamics is one of 29 companies to receive the award. The firm was praised for building the Middletown, Rhode Island, security program practices to a level that exceeds the standards and requirements set forth by the National Industrial Security Program.

The Cogswell Award is the most esteemed honor DSS gives to a cleared defense contractor. The selection process is very rigorous. Only five percent of the Department of Defense (DoD) contractors in the country are nominated for the award. Facilities are chosen by their assigned DSS Industrial Security Representatives, based on specific criteria and two consecutive superior industrial security reviews.

“I am extremely proud to have the Department of Defense recognize the importance General Dynamics has always placed on industry-government collaboration,” said Mike Garrity, vice president of finance and administration at General Dynamics Information Technology. “The government has trusted us for many years to protect the best interests of our nation, and we look forward to being able to raise the bar when it comes to enhancing security standards.”

All 12,500 defense companies active in the National Industrial Security Program (NISP) compete for the Cogswell Award. In addition to supporting DoD initiatives, nominees must adhere to NISP standards and exceed the requirements of the National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual.

The Cogswell Award was established in 1966 and named for the late U.S. Air Force Colonel James S. Cogswell. As the first chief of the unified office of Industrial Security, Cogswell developed the fundamental principles of the Industrial Security Program. Cogswell stressed the importance of an industry and government partnership to achieve industrial security objectives for the U.S. warfighter.
