Every May, the City of Toronto is transformed into a giant art gallery when it hosts one of North America’s largest photography festivals. Now in its 11th year, The CONTACT Photography Festival features the artwork of over 500 professional Canadian and international emerging photographers, photojournalists and artists, whose artwork is exhibited in over 200 venues across the Greater Toronto Area, transforming the city into an enormous gallery. Restaurants, government buildings, public spaces, street corners, hotels, schools and museums become the backdrop for their work.

Digging through its archives, “FT” gathered the best of Toronto’s elite photography festival, to celebrate the art form and its impact. “The Best of CONTACT: A Photography Festival” is a 10-year Anniversary Special, highlighting CONTACT’s influence within the Toronto landscape and abroad. Featuring collections from former Talking Heads front-man David Byrne, who takes us on a stroll to check out his photo installation displayed in transit shelters along Queen Street West and an emotional conversation with journalist Joel Meyerowitz, who shares his thoughts on being the ’official photographer’ to document the aftermath of 9/11. Plus, Toronto-based photographer Jack Burman defends his sensitive and somewhat macabre subject-matter, which often leaves spectators contemplating their own mortality.

Catch the best of the best and go behind the meaning of the phrase ’a picture tells a thousand words’ with “The Best of CONTACT: A Photography Festival” premiering on Citytv.
