Yale Holds Communiversity Day with an International Twist

New Haven, Conn. — On Saturday, April 21, Yale’s stately Old Campus, bounded by College, Chapel, High and Elm streets, will be transformed into a kids’ carnival when the University hosts its annual Communiversity Day celebration and an International Cultural Festival, 11 a.m.–3 p.m.

Free and open to the public, the annual celebration—this year dedicated to the theme of “growing and learning together”— is put on by the Yale Delta Nu chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, a national co-ed service fraternity. The event is designed to raise awareness among New Haven residents of available community services and the diverse ways the University can enrich their lives. In past years, the much anticipated event has drawn thousands from New Haven and surrounding towns to the Yale campus.

Children, and the significant adults in their lives, are welcome to partake in the fun, which includes a moon bounce, arts and crafts, face painting and star-gazing in an indoor planetarium. Participants can make free withdrawals from the New Haven READS Community Book Bank, win prizes from local retailers and learn about handicrafts from international artisans. Hot dogs, burgers and soft drinks will be served “on the house.”

The international festival will feature lively and colorful performances of dance and music from around the world and cultural booths and workshops.

Mayor John DeStefano of New Haven and Yale Vice President of New Haven and State Affairs Bruce Alexander will address the celebrants.

“Communiversity Day is a great opportunity to bring together the Yale and New Haven communities to celebrate the organizational ties that link them and foster continued cooperation,” said Yale APO President Daniel Katz, the 2007 Communiversity Day Chair.
