Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc., one of the world’s leading suppliers of innovative computer products including hard disk drives, peripherals and biometric security solutions, today announced that Security Engineered Machinery Co., Inc. (SEM) has installed the Fujitsu PalmSecure™ biometric authentication device in its Secure Destruction Room of the Westboro, MA headquartered facility.

SEM is the largest direct supplier of document destruction equipment in the United States for commercial and government end-users. Its national shredding service of hard disk drives, personal computers, data-tapes and other related electronic media, operates within the Secure Destruction Room, which is accessible to only a handful of SEM employees and handles highly classified paperwork and computer hardware. The primary goal of deploying Fujitsu’s PalmSecure authentication device is to establish a strict employee identification process at the headquartered facility, and particularly, at the Secure Destruction Room to assist in meeting privacy standards.

“We operate in a highly sophisticated data destruction environment that depends on strict security policy and requires advanced access control management. While we maintain a strict internal process for permitting access into our Secure Destruction Room, we need an extra layer of security,” said Peter Dempsey, President, Security Engineered Machinery Co., Inc. “Fujitsu’s PalmSecure sensor proved to be highly accurate and reliable in authenticating identities, enabling a streamlined process for access authentication and alleviating our concern of unauthorized admission.”

The Secure Destruction Room is the most secure room within the facility, equipped with multiple surveillance cameras to allow customers to verify destruction of their sensitive data in real time via secure Internet Protocol (IP) access. The PalmSecure installation creates an added layer of security for SEM’s sensitive data operations with a solution that offers a powerful, robust biometric authentication tool for security and access management.

“Fujitsu is poised to support the security access requirements across a number of vertical markets, including education, healthcare, government, enterprise and beyond. We’re pleased that SEM has selected Fujitsu’s PalmSecure sensor to safeguard their confidential customer data,” said Joel Hagberg, vice president, marketing and business development, Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc.

The Fujitsu PalmSecure device authenticates an individual based on the person’s palm vein pattern and provides a highly reliable and accurate form of verification. Utilizing the latest in biometric security technology, the user-friendly sensor introduces a second layer of protection for accessing confidential and sophisticated data-centric sites.
