Longtime Self-Taught Musician Fred Grace Schedules Exhibit of His Most Straightforward Guide to Music Chords for Hong Kong Book Fair 2024
Fred I. Grace has several Masters and PhDs to his name, but he also nurtured a passion for music that’s entirely self-taught. This year, he now plans to share his approach to the art in a book simply titled “Understanding Music Chord Structures and Progression.” The book is set to exhibit at the Hong Kong Book Fair 2024, and Grace hopes its practical perspective on musical theory will go a long way to educating younger self-taught musicians across Asia.
“A great way to learn fundamentals of music from a practical point of view. Awesome Book!” – F. G.
Once a small event for local writers, the Hong Kong Book Fair is now the city’s biggest, go-to literature convention. Authors and their publishers from around the world gather here as part of their yearly exhibit tour through Asia. Meanwhile, visitors can come here to find a book with answers to numerous topics as well as various ideas for inspiration.
In fact, even musically-inclined authors like Fred I. Grace are eager to share their knowledge via exhibited works.
Grace is the author of “Understanding Music Chord Structures and Progression,” a book that packs together his self-taught lessons, including all the way to musical theory itself.
His journey all began when he was an eleven-year-old boy in a small town in Pennsylvania. Selling seeds, he managed to buy his first guitar and it even came with its own little chord book.
Today, he holds a BA, Master’s, and several PhD degrees to his name. While he has a strong background in physics, his love and passion for music still burns bright. His book “Understanding Music Chord Structures and Progression” serves to demonstrate that by presenting a comprehensive, step-by-step, logical layout for a solid understanding of chord structures.
Within just ten chapters, Grace gives a down-to-earth presentation that demystifies elements of musical theory. It covers major and minor triads, augment, and diminish, and it also tackles how build-ups to seven-note chord structures are developed.
Overall, it’s a book that’s dedicated to younger musicians who share Grace’s own humble beginnings and are eager to teach themselves better.

Author Bio
Dr. Grace grew up in the country, far from a small town in Pennsylvania. He sold seeds to get his first guitar at age of eleven. With no guitar teacher within miles, he taught himself to play simple songs through a little chord book that came with the guitar. He went from the farm to studying Physics getting a BA, Masters, and PhD degrees.
Aside from Physics, he has always had an interest in prose, poetry, and music. This book is an example of his accomplishment in music as he lays out, in simplified terms, elements of music theory. This book not only applies to guitar, but piano, coral groups and orchestral, as well. His discipline of physics shows up in his approach where everything in this music book starts with definition of terms and is laid out in stepwise fashion.
