AOL Names Andy Spillane as Vice President of Product Development for Messaging and Social Media

DULLES, VA, - AOL today announced that Andy Spillane has joined the company as Vice President of Product Development for Messaging and Social Media. In this role, Spillane is responsible for the leadership, vision and day-to-day management of AOL’s messaging and social media products, including AIM, AOL Community and AOL Voice products.



Spillane brings to AOL more than 15 years of experience in the Internet and computer industries. He returns to AOL after serving more than two years as vice president and general manager for Yahoo! Mail, where he was responsible for all aspects of the company’s email service.



Prior to his role at Yahoo!, Spillane held several key roles at AOL and Netscape over the course of a decade. During this time, he served as project owner of AOL’s Open Client initiative and directed the team in charge of developing product strategies for AOL’s communications and connectivity experiences over broadband, with specific emphasis on the launch of AOL Communicator, an advanced email and instant messaging communications suite. Spillane’s first leadership roles for AOL came within iPlanet E-commerce Solutions, an alliance with Sun Microsystems created after AOL’s acquisition of Netscape in late 1999. During his years at Netscape, Spillane held numerous technical and managerial positions in Netscape Worldwide Professional Services. He holds doctorate of philosophy, master’s of science, and bachelor’s of science degrees in systems engineering from the University of Virginia
