Thomas F. Mcloughlin earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Morehead State University in Kentucky. He completed his Master Thesis in Geology at Eastern Kentucky University in 1979.

In 1980, he joined the U.S. Department of Labor Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) as a geologist and coal mine inspector, collecting plant fossils in coal mines and outcrops in southwestern Virginia.

He taught introduction to geology courses for 26 years. Mcloughlin started as a “rock hound,” collecting rocks, minerals, and fossils, eventually becoming a geologist. He practiced lapidary work, making jewelry from minerals and rocks, during high school and college.
