Motorola, Inc (NYSE: MOT) today announced that Motorola Technology Sdn Bhd had recently been awarded with the prestigious Penang Chief Minister’s K-ICT Award 2007 for its best practices in developing knowledge workers at its manufacturing operations. The Award won Motorola RM10,000 in cash, a certificate and a trophy.

The Penang Chief Minister’s K-ICT Awards is open to organizations that are operating in Penang and have designed or developed exciting and innovative products or services that benefit the industry, citizens and government or have effectively implemented ICT solutions to improve the delivery system or customer services of their businesses.

Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, Penang Chief Minister presented the Award to Mr. Yew Tian Tek, Managing Director of Motorola Technology Sdn Bhd during the award presentation ceremony. Organized by the state government of Penang under its K-ICT Council, it highlights the critical role that ICT will play as a driver of Penang’s economic growth.

“It is an honor to receive this Award from the Penang state government and we would like to express our deepest appreciation to the government for initiating this exclusive K-ICT Award. Motorola in Penang is constantly pursuing innovative efforts to move up the value chain, both in terms of our business operations and advancing our people’s skill sets. However, we also believe in giving back to the community and have been gladly sharing our best practices with the local community. This award has further strengthened our commitment to Malaysia,” Mr. Yew Tian Tek, Managing Director of Motorola Technology Sdn Bhd said.

“As part of our corporate social responsibility to continuously promote ICT knowledge to our community, we plan to use the award money in areas where we can help to cultivate ICT related projects among the young generation. With this plan in mind, we hope to work together with the relevant educational bodies to explore potential projects,” Mr. Yew said.

The K-ICT Award is comprised of four categories, namely, e-Business, e-Services Award, e-Community Award and Knowledge Worker Development Award. The judging panel is comprised of individuals from the private and public sector, industry and academia, who have been selected based on their knowledge and expertise in their respective fields. Awards were presented to the most innovative programmes or projects undertaken by an organization within each category.

Through the Knowledge Worker Development Award, Motorola was recognized for its initiatives in promoting effective use of ICT as a tool for its communications and training programmes so as to accomplish key organizational action plans and needs, and develop its employees’ potential to achieve the company’s objectives.

Motorola was able to clinch the prestigious award based on its successful implementation of the Motorola Digital Six Sigma/Quality IQ initiative from 2001 – 2006.

Some of the significant results achieved by the implementation of the Motorola Digital Six Sigma/Quality program were the strengthening of its competitiveness, improvements to the overall quality of its business operations, and the transformation of manual labor to become a more knowledge based workforce. In addition, Motorola recorded savings of approximately USD30 million over 230 engineering based projects implemented since 2001.

The implementation of Motorola Digital Six Sigma/Quality program has also progressively increased the number of its knowledge workers at various levels from 20% to 46% and generated over 2,300 internal engineering patent submissions that were solutions made in Malaysia.

In addition, the company has contributed significantly to the community by imparting its knowledge through engineering programmes to the Penang Skill Design Centre. The company also donated radio kits to promote the study of radio frequency communications at various local universities.
