Spanish Province of Malaga Improves Service to Citizens with Advanced Unified Communications

MADRID, SPAIN - The province of Málaga in Spain will be able to communicate more effectively and improve the delivery of services to nearly two million citizens through the implementation of an advanced unified network solution from Nortel* [NYSE/TSX: NT]. The province will also benefit from a reduction in its communication costs as a result of integrating data, voice and video communication at its new headquarters in the town of Málaga.
Diputación de Málaga provides economic and technological support to municipal councils, helping them to provide consistently high-quality local services throughout the province. It also co-ordinates municipal services and organizes public services on a regional basis.

The Diputación de Málaga’s new converged IP network will provide its 1,000 employees with comprehensive fixed and mobile voice services as well as unified voice, fax and e-mail. The network will also provide a platform for the introduction of anywhere, anytime advanced mobility communications and collaboration services.

Voice and video connectivity to remote local councils across the province and other provincial government facilities within the capital city of Málaga, will be supported by the new network, enabling greater integration among different Diputación departments.

The Málaga deployment includes a comprehensive end-to-end portfolio of Nortel solutions. Ethernet Routing Switches 8300 and 5520 provide reliable connectivity between government buildings across the province. IP Telephony is enabled through Nortel’s full-featured Communication Server 1000E IP PBX with Nortel IP phones 1120E and 1140E. CallPilot 4.0 and Multimedia Communication Server (MCS) 5100 provide unified messaging and SIP-based multimedia and collaborative applications.

Business Communications Manager (BCM) 50 is used within small government buildings to provide a converged voice and data “office-in-a-box” solution. Nortel’s WLAN 2300 will provide Málaga with the flexibility to wirelessly access online resources from anywhere within government buildings, with comprehensive security features to authenticate and authorize different types of users as well as protect against intrusion.
