Siemens receives the green light for modernization of the traffic infrastructure in Prague

WEBWIRE

The Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S) has received an order to modernize the traffic infrastructure in Prague in order to improve the flow of traffic in the capital of the Czech Republic. Technická správa komunikací (TSK, Technical municipal authorities for street maintenance) of the city of Prague, together with Eltodo dopravní systémy s.r.o. (EDS), a joint venture of Siemens and Eltodo EG, a.s., have signed a contract with a period of 15 years and a total volume of 156 million euros.

As part of its modernization program, Prague wants to equip all ten zones of the city with traffic control centers and connect them to a central traffic computer. From 2010 onwards, this computer will control road traffic in Prague on the basis of the actual concentration of traffic. In addition, most of the traffic lights will be able to operate in local dynamic mode. This will allow automatic extension of the green phase when the traffic density is high, for example, or will enable the traffic light to be changed to green for vehicles coming from infrequently used side streets, as required. At some intersections, systems for the prioritization of public transport vehicles will be installed. In order to improve safety and optimize the flow of traffic, the city also wants to increase the number of intersections from 500 at the moment to 700 in the next ten years. The new traffic lights are to be equipped with power-saving LED technology.

The aim of the authorities in Prague is to improve the flow of traffic in the capital of the Czech Republic with the help of traffic-dependent control concepts. At the same time, the aim is to increase the failure safety of the technical systems and accelerate rectification of faults. EDS is responsible for installation of the new equipment as well as for ongoing maintenance of all the devices and systems. Main sub-suppliers of EDS are Signalbau Huber CZ s.r.o. (SBH) and AŽD Praha.
