Children’s Health Month in Puerto Rico and Exposure Risks to Indoor and Outdoor Environmental Hazards

Zimmetry Environmental provides indoor air quality and environmental testing and consulting services to identify and mitigate exposure risks to protect children, families and workers.

Bayamon, Puerto Rico – WEBWIRE

There are still places in Puerto Rico where children can come into contact with everything from lead and asbestos, to volatile organic compounds, radon and potentially harmful microbial pathogens.

Children are more vulnerable to contact with various chemical and microbial substances due to differences in behavior and biology that can lead to greater exposure and/or unique windows of susceptibility during development.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that children’s nervous, immune response, digestive and other bodily systems are still developing and are more easily harmed by exposure. Children also eat more food, drink more fluids and breathe more air than adults in proportion to their body size. The behavior of children, such as crawling and placing objects in their mouths, can also increase their risk of environmental exposures.

Recognizing the need to protect children from environmental hazards, the month of October is recognized as Children’s Health Month. EPA, along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other entities provide resources to help raise awareness about protecting children from environmental hazards in the places where they live, play and learn.

“There are still places in Puerto Rico where children can come into contact with everything from lead and asbestos, to volatile organic compounds, radon and potentially harmful microbial pathogens,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “To protect the children of Puerto Rico, the professionals at Zimmetry have been providing indoor and outdoor environmental testing and consulting services to identify and mitigate a wide range of microbial, chemical and radiological hazards for the past 20 years. Our experts help to create healthy environments for children in and around their homes, schools, daycare centers, playgrounds and other locations they spend time.”

Several years ago, Zimmetry sponsored an educational video about Children’s Health Month that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/zK3mLG-JWaY
