VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA and LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- The Royal Indian Raj International Corporation (RIRIC) today announced the appointment of former World Chairman and CEO of HSBC (Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation) and member of the House of Lords, Lord Michael Sandberg, CBE as Chairman of its Advisory Board of Directors.

Michael Sandberg was born in Surrey on the 31st May 1927, and educated at St. Edward’s School, Oxford. In 1945, he decided to join the army and did his pre-officer’s training in Kent. Attracted by the prospect of warmer climes, he volunteered to join the Indian Army, and was posted to the North West Frontier with the Sixth Lancers. Upon Indian Independence, he joined the First King’s Dragoon Guards, and went to serve in Palestine and North Africa. In 1949, Michael returned to the East and joined the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation, later marrying Carmel Donnelly in 1954. In 1977, he became Chairman and Chief Executive of the HSBC Group. Michael Sandberg was awarded a CBE in 1982, and knighted on his retirement from the Bank in 1986. Since retiring, he has remained active on the boards of several companies in Hong Kong, North America and Australia.

His main interests lie in cricket, horology and horse racing. In 1998, he published a portfolio volume of his antique watch collection entitled, “The Sandberg Watch Collection”.

In 1997, Lord Sandberg embarked on a second career when he entered the House of Lords. He is a regular attendee there, and enjoys speaking on subjects such as sport, foreign affairs and the Arts. Michael and Carmel Sandberg live in Hampshire, and have two sons and two daughters.
