Creamery in California Issues Allergy Alert and Yogurt Recall Notice Due to a Possible Undeclared Egg Allergen

LA Testing provides food testing services to protect the public and to help companies comply with allergen and labeling regulations to prevent costly recalls.

Huntington Beach, California – WEBWIRE

Last month, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted information about an allergy alert and product recall initiated by a creamery based in Northern California. The alert and recall were launched because one lot of a French Vanilla Yogurt product that was produced by the creamery may contain an undeclared egg allergen. The yogurt was distributed to retail stores in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.

According to the recall notice, people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to egg allergen run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product. Consumers with an egg allergy or sensitivity are urged to not consume the recalled yogurt.

The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA) requires that food labels clearly identify the food source names of all ingredients that are, or contain any protein derived from, the eight most common food allergens. These account for 90% of allergic reactions to foods. They include eggs, wheat, milk, crustacean shellfish, fish, tree nuts, peanuts, and soybeans.

“Fortunately, in this case, the manufacturer had not received any reports of illnesses at the time of the recall announcement,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “This is good news as there is no cure for food allergies. Anyone with the condition needs to avoid all foods that contain the allergen they are sensitive to in order to avoid a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis.”

Working with food manufacturers, distributors, importers, retailers, and regulators with food labeling and testing requirements are the scientists at LA Testing. They offer a wide range of services that can not only help to prevent costly product recalls.
