Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Group (MCHG) is pleased to announce that the European Patent Office (EPO) issued a decision on March 16, 2022 declaring the validity of the basic patent in Europe (patent number EP2365017B, hereinafter, the “Patent”) of MCHG describing pellets and other products made from polyester derived from biomass raw materials, after conducting an oral hearing on January 18, 2022. Regarding the Patent, objections had been filed by several companies and parties with the EPO asking for invalidation.

The Patent is a substance patent that describes pellets and molded products made from biomass-based high-quality polyester, and is a basic patent essential for the manufacture and sale of biomass-based polyesters. MCHG has registered several similar inventions in Europe, Japan, the U.S., and China. The decision by the EPO reaffirms the international validity of the patent group owned by the MCHG.

MCHG owns many other patents pertaining to biomass-based products. By taking advantage of this patent group, we have been expanding our business and promoting strategic collaborations with external parties. We have also actively licensed our patents to other companies with which we have reached an agreement. With stronger competitiveness achieved in the respective markets, we will contribute to expanding the market for biomass-based products that impose less environmental load.
