Kids struggling in and disliking Math is not new to society. However, changing the approach on teaching Math can lead to fun and excitement for both kids and the teachers. Research shows that kids improve when different ways of learning are recognized and addressed.

“Mathematics, with its many technical applications, now underpins all areas of our lives.” – Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO

Attitude toward Math determines how a child would approach the subject, and attitude stems from a child’s understanding of its importance and appreciation of its day to day application.

“The Boy Who Hated Numbers” by Jose Rosell Arranguez Jr., tells a story of a boy named Rebmun and his hatred toward numbers. Knowing his parents wanted him to excel in Mathematics, the boy resists them by refusing to learn anything about it, which leads to a real abomination to numbers. One day, Rebmun throws the parrot his parents gave him out the window, irritated by its daily recitation of numbers. However, the boy feels guilty and goes to look for his bird. His search leads him to a forest and a grand adventure.

The story was inspired by the author’s youngest son, who, like the protagonist, had an aversion to numbers. The importance of Math is cleverly integrated into the story, an ingenious application that makes the protagonist a hero, leading to a change of heart.

“The Boy Who Hated Numbers” is 176 pages and is now available in eBook and print versions at Amazon.
