The session, promoted by the Balearic Government and directed by Iñaki Alonso, had the objective of debating on how to guarantee sports spaces free of violence in sports organizations and to analyze the implications of the new Law 8/2021 on the comprehensive protection of children and adolescence.

Iñaki Alonso is a lawyer, an expert in child protection and has extensive experience in humanitarian aid organizations. In addition, he has always been linked to the sports field.

“Aterpe”, which means refuge in Basque, is the name of the program carried out by Athletic Club de Bilbao to guarantee safe and violence-free spaces for minors in sports.

The figure of the child protection officer within the club aims to lay the foundations for systematic work that will culminate in a comprehensive child protection policy including elements of prevention, training and action protocols whose sole purpose is the welfare of all the boys and girls of the entity.

Iñaki assured in his presentation that it is important to be clear that boys and girls are subjects of rights and must always be at the center as active agents capable of giving their opinion and participating.

We must expand the concept of violence within the sports field, since there are still different types of aggression that are difficult to identify, because they usually occur in invisible spaces. Violence also occurs outside the competitive sphere and is usually carried out by a person within the minor’s circle of trust, which has a brutal impact on their development.

The key to confronting and identifying this type of violence is to be aware that it exists. Because only in that way can it be treated responsibly.

To guarantee the well-being of minors, it is good to have the figure of a person in charge or delegate for the protection of minors in each club, promoting the institutional responsibility of the same towards this important issue.

Law 8/2021 on the comprehensive protection of children and adolescents is a framework of action for the prevention and action against violence against children and for the first time in history, this law makes the world of sports visible with a specific rule for this area.

In this law there are two articles and a chapter dedicated to sport and this is the first step. But we know that the legal approach is not enough to work on child protection. We need a comprehensive program of training, prevention and action in each entity.

The year 2022 is presented as a very important year for children’s rights and from Aterpe they work to promote spaces for debate on this matter, advise and accompany any sports entity that needs it.

At the Rafa Nadal Foundation we have been working for months on our child protection policy and its application in each of our projects, with training for all professionals.

We have been present at the session given by Iñaki at the Sports Technology Center of the Balearic Islands in Palma de Mallorca and we will continue to participate in training to gradually improve our action protocols and guarantee the well-being of the minors we serve.
