Asbestos Concerns Result in the Temporarily Closure of an Elementary School after the Discovery of Vermiculite Insulation

Ann Arbor, Michigan – WEBWIRE

Last month, multiple media outlets reported on the temporary closure of an elementary school in Michigan after contractors discovered vermiculite insulation. The closure was caused by concerns over the potential presence of asbestos in the vermiculite.

Vermiculite is a type of mineral that has been a commercial commodity throughout the world for many decades. When heated to a high temperature, flakes of vermiculite expand as much as 8-30 times their original size. The expanded vermiculite is a light-weight, fire-resistant, and odorless material that has been used in numerous products, including insulation for attics and walls. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), approximately one million homes in the United States contain vermiculite attic insulation. It was also used in commercial and institutional properties.

“The reason vermiculite is a concern is due to the fact that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that a mine in Libby, Montana was the source of over 70% of all vermiculite sold in the United States from 1919 to 1990,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “While the vermiculite itself is not known to cause health issues, it was the fact that the vermiculite at this mine was interlaced with amphibole asbestos minerals that made it a danger. Anytime vermiculite is found in home it is important to have it tested for asbestos before any remodeling, repair, or demolition activities take place. A quick test can provide the answer. If test results indicate asbestos is present, it needs to be handled properly so it doesn’t pose a threat to anyone in the home or building.”

With laboratories in the United States and Canada, EMSL Analytical provides testing services for asbestos in vermiculite insulation and from other asbestos-containing materials. They also offer all of the sampling supplies needed and carry an easy-to-use test kit specifically for vermiculite insulation. EMSL has even sponsored an educational video about vermiculite insulation that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/WDNVhBwKmpc
