While death rates have been slowly decreasing over the years, COPD continues to be a significant cause of death in the United States and is also a major cause of disability.

November is recognized as National COPD Awareness Month. The NIH’s National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute states that it is a distinct time for the COPD community to come together with one voice to focus on increasing awareness of the disease. Across the nation, organizations are conducting outreach and holding events to bring greater visibility to COPD and to encourage people to recognize its symptoms and seek diagnosis and treatment earlier.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as a group of diseases that cause airflow blockage and breathing-related problems. It includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. COPD makes breathing difficult for the 16 million Americans who have this disease. Millions more suffer from COPD, but have not been diagnosed and are not being treated.

“While death rates have been slowly decreasing over the years, COPD continues to be a significant cause of death in the United States and is also a major cause of disability,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “Although there is no cure for COPD, it can be treated. A large percentage of cases can be linked to smoking tobacco; however, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated that 1 in 4 people with COPD have never smoked. Exposure to air pollutants at home and work, as well as genetic factors and respiratory infections, also play a role. This is why the agency states that the most important aspect of treatment for COPD is avoiding tobacco smoke and other air pollutants.”

It is well known that exposure to elevated levels of bioaerosols, gases, dusts and fumes can all exacerbate COPD conditions. This is why the industrial hygiene and indoor environmental quality professionals at Zimmetry Environmental offer air testing services to identify chemical and biological pollutants, allergens and respiratory irritants in residential and work environments throughout Puerto Rico. If testing indicates air quality issues, Zimmetry’s building science experts can help to develop solutions to eliminate or mitigate these exposure risks.
