"A compelling historical fiction about a slave who daydreams about being free in America"

Denson Jones’s “A Southern Dream” (Xlibris; 2020) brings into mind similar slave narratives, such as the movie Amistad directed by Steven Spielberg and the memoir 12 Years a Slave by Solomon Northup, all of which revolve around the themes of freedom, affirmation of the human spirit, inhumanity, and hope.

“A Southern Dream” tells the story of an African male who was taken from his tribe and brought to the United States as a slave. He spends a lot of his days just daydreaming about freedom. Jacob Jackson came from a proud African tribe before he was captured and brought to the Jackson Plantation in Laurel, Mississippi. Jacob would daydream all day about being free, and he would let people know how he felt about the life he lived.

Jacob always stood up for righteousness and godliness. He is a God-fearing man who reads the Bible, attends the Baptist church, and sings in the choir. He also loves to preach the Word of God to anyone who would listen to him. He would also help his fellow slaves any way he could with food, water, and clothing and even secretly teaches them how to read and write.

One day, Jacob sees a runaway slave from another plantation. To know what happens next, read Denson Jones’ “A Southern Dream.”
