Febvre leads double Dunlop MXGP podium at Lommel

Lommel, Belgium – WEBWIRE
  • Dunlop Kawasaki rider wins in Belgium
  • Two Dunlop riders on the MXGP podium
  • Van der Vlist leads Dunlop 1-2 in WMX

Dunlop rider Romain Febvre scored his first Grand Prix win of the FIM Motocross World Championship season at Lommel, Belgium. The Frenchman shared the podium with fellow Dunlop rider Pauls Jonass, who placed third after a day of hard-fought racing on one of the championship’s toughest circuits.

Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team rider Febvre finished second in the opening race of the day and won the second race, giving him enough points to win his first Grand Prix since Mantova last year, which was also with Dunlop. The result also propels him to second in the championship standings, keeping him firmly in the fight to become 2021 World Champion.

Lommel is known as one of the most demanding tracks on the MXGP calendar with its deep sand surface. Getting traction out of the starting gate is crucial to setting a rider up for 30 minutes plus two laps of racing. Dunlop riders benefitted from grip off the line in both races, with Febvre winning the Holeshot award (as the first rider to reach the first corner) in Race 1 and his Kawasaki teammate Ivo Monticelli pulling off a similar feat in Race 2.

Another Dunlop rider celebrating his performance on Sunday was Pauls Jonass, who finished runner-up in Race 2 and ended the day third in the overall classification to stand on the podium for the first time this year. The Latvian racer battled with Febvre throughout the second race, leading for several laps.

On Saturday, Dunlop rider Shana van der Vlist won the second round of the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship season, beating six-time champion Kiara Fontanesi to lead a Dunlop 1-2 result. Van der Vlist takes over the championship lead, two points ahead of reigning champion Courtney Duncan, who took a double victory in the Czech Republic last weekend.

Dunlop is by far the most successful tyre brand in WMX competition, having taken Fontanesi or Duncan to the championship win in eight of the nine last seasons.

Eddy Seel, MXGP Event Leader, Dunlop: “Congratulations to all our riders who finished on the podium this weekend. We’re delighted to support Romain Febvre in not only his first win of 2021, but Dunlop’s first Grand Prix victory, too. Pauls Jonass’ podium is a great achievement as well. Shana van der Vlist showed excellent performance in WMX, too. Lommel is a difficult track but it’s clear to see that the Dunlop Geomax tyres chosen this weekend were up to the challenge. We’re particularly pleased to have scored every Holeshot in MXGP and WMX.”
