Sony Pictures Extends Tom Rothman’s Contract, Names Him Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group

Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) announced that Tom Rothman has added CEO to his Chairman title and has extended his contract to continue oversight of the film studio. Rothman oversees the studio’s motion picture businesses including Columbia Pictures, TriStar Pictures, Screen Gems, Sony Pictures Animation, Sony Pictures Imageworks, 3000 Pictures, Sony Pictures International Productions, Stage 6 Films, AFFIRM Films, and Sony Pictures Classics. Rothman will continue to report to Tony Vinciquerra, Chairman and CEO of SPE.

Rothman has led the motion picture group to outstanding results since he assumed oversight of the film studio in 2015, with successful slates and strategic down-market exploitation driving record profitability. Under Rothman’s leadership, the studio has reignited or launched numerous franchises, while also continuing to make many distinctive original films. Some of these hits include the highest-grossing film in Columbia Pictures’ long history, Spider-Man: Far From Home, the new Jumanji installments, the Hotel Transylvania franchise, the newest Bad Boys, Venom, Don’t Breathe, Baby Driver, The Father, and the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

In 2020 the studio was honored with 20 Academy Award® nominations, including two for Best Picture: Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood and Greta Gerwig’s Little Women.

The studio will release several highly anticipated titles this year and next including: Venom: Let There Be Carnage, the sequel to the $850 million global phenomenon; Spider-Man: No Way Home; Morbius, the next Sony Pictures’ Marvel character to come to life on the big screen; Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Jason Reitman’s follow-up to Ivan Reitman’s classic 1980s Ghostbusters films; PlayStation Productions’ Uncharted starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg; Oscar hopeful A Journal For Jordan, directed by Denzel Washington and starring Michael B. Rothman joined Sony Pictures in 2013 as Chairman of TriStar Pictures before being promoted to Chairman Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group in February 2015. Previously, Rothman served as Chairman and CEO of Fox Filmed Entertainment from 2000 – 2012 and held various positions at the studio including President of Twentieth Century Fox Film Group, President of Production for Twentieth Century Fox, and President of Fox Searchlight. Prior to Fox, Rothman was President of Worldwide Production for the Samuel Goldwyn Company, Executive Vice President at Columbia Pictures, and a partner at the New York entertainment law firm Frankfurt, Kurnit, Klein and Selz.
