“Blood on the Door,” The Debut Album by Andrew Browning and The Nine Pound Hammers, is Gritty, Pandemic-Inspired Outlaw Country

Andrew Browning and the Nine Pound Hammers will release their debut album, “Blood on the Door,” July 2, 2021. Ruminating on the themes of love & loss, salvation & damnation, and good & evil, Browning’s lyrics are particularly poignant in the time of a global pandemic, when there are more questions than answers. “We were all wearing masks anyway, which inspired the hypothetical question: ‘what would be playing in the getaway car if Waylon Jennings, Neil Young, and Nick Cave were robbing a bank?’” says Browning.

Along with producer Derek O’Brien (Social Distortion, Agent Orange, the Adolescents), Andrew Browning and the Nine Pounds Hammers have created a gritty outlaw country album that encapsulates the foreboding mood that hung over 2020.

Twenty-three years after their last collaboration in an ill-fated pop band, Browning and O’Brien bumped into each other by chance in an LA dive bar, and knew they could create something special, something uniquely Los Angeles. With Browning’s grizzled growl and dystopian poetry, the backing of a cracking band, and the ear of one of LA’s finest punk producers, “Blood on the Door” is what you get when you brew coarse-ground country with no filter, then add an extra shot.

The crew driving this rough-hewn brand of outlaw country includes Phillip Alan Smith on guitar, who channels the sounds of his native tornado alley with his red dirt telecaster b-bending, and Ilya Portnov, who plays harmonica like he’s summoning the devil. Luke Notary’s drumming anchors the band in the LA asphalt while Lelah Simon’s bass playing is the chemical bond that holds the group together.

Taking their name from the story of folk hero John Henry, Andrew Browning and the Nine Pound Hammers create music that challenges the digital culture of the 21st century and brings the listener along for one hell of a ride.

“Blood on the Door” will be released across all digital platforms on July 2, 2021
