National Public Health Week is a reminder of the importance of efforts to protect workers and the public from exposure risks to infectious diseases and other hazards that have a negative impact on health.

Building Bridges to Better Health is the theme for this year’s National Public Health Week. The event officially takes place from April 5th through the 11th and is a time to focus on timely public health topics. Last year’s themes ranged from healthy housing to environmental health and this year’s focus includes COVID-19 and protecting public health workers.

Key components of public health, which have received renewed attention due to the pandemic that has ravaged the globe, include indoor environmental quality (IEQ) and infection control. Public health officials, employers and the general public are today much more aware of the significance of safe buildings and IEQ due to the novel coronavirus.

“National Public Health Week is a reminder of the importance of efforts to protect workers and the public from exposure risks to infectious diseases and other hazards that have a negative impact on health,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “Are cleaning and disinfection procedures adequate; what are the ventilation rates and is enough fresh air entering a business, hospital or school; is there water damage leading to indoor mold growth; are there lead-based paints or asbestos-containing materials; has the building’s water system been tested for Legionella bacteria? These are all factors we can address and have a positive influence upon to help protect people’s health and safety.”

In Puerto Rico and throughout the Caribbean, the infection control and building science professionals at Zimmetry Environmental help to answer these questions. They offer building inspections, training, consulting and testing services to detect both microbial and chemical hazards from air, water, surface, soil and bulk materials. These services not only protect people, they are also often instrumental for keeping companies and institutions in regulatory compliance.
