Andra Day secures Oscar nomination for her performance in Sky Original film, The United States vs Billie Holiday

WEBWIRE

Following a critically acclaimed performance in The United States vs Billie Holiday, Andra Day has been nominated for an Academy Award® in the hotly contested Best Actress in a Leading Role category. Day plays legendary jazz icon Billie Holiday in this Sky Original biographical film.

The nomination for Day’s portrayal of Billie follows her success at the Golden Globe Awards® earlier this month when she became the second ever black woman to win the Best Actress in a Motion Picture category.

Set in the 1940s in New York, the biopic follows the legendary Billie Holiday, who spent much of her career being adored by fans across the globe. Her defiance through her powerful performances of songs like ‘Strange Fruit’ redefined popular music, civil rights awareness and activism.

Directed by Oscar®-nominated Lee Daniels with screenplay by writer Suzan-Lori Parks, the first African American woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for drama, the film boldly represents Holiday’s irrepressible life.

Sky Cinema is the home of Sky Original films, with brand new films launching every month alongside an unrivalled range of the latest cinema releases and on demand library.
